New Smyrna Beach Area - Indian River Lagoon - Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

October 27, 2016

October is about to wrap up in a few days and we are down to about the last 60 days of the year. We are in the midst of the annual fall bait run and tens of thousands of mullet have filled the Lagoons. Redfish, speckled trout and snook are and will be the three main target species for us for the remainder of the year.

A lot has changed since my last report. East-Central Florida took a glancing blow from Hurricane Matthew. There are some islands with tree and mangrove damage, but nothing serious. The hurricane did push in an extra 3-4 feet of water, which has since mostly drained back out. In doing so it appears we just might have rid ourselves of the algae bloom from the past 5 years as the water is now remarkably clear in Mosquito Lagoon. The are large areas that are quite muddy from the creeks, ditches, and backwater ponds continuing to drain out. Hopefully this sediment will soon settle and that water will clean up too. But it’s a great time to do some sight fishing!

The clean water on the grass flats in Mosquito Lagoon is allowing for some great fishing for redfish, as well as on shorelines and oyster bed creeks in New Smyrna Beach area. We are finding good size schools (35-70 fish), small pods and single fish tailing on grass flats and hanging around shorelines. These fish are all in the 20-30” range or 3-10 pounds. They have been eating soft plastics, spoons, plugs, and live mullet. Bigger bull reds over 20 pounds are winding down their annual spawn at Ponce Inlet and in the Indian River. After which they scatter throughout the region for a short while which will make them a harder to target and find opportunities.

As things continue to get cooler we’ll start seeing more and more big speckled trout in Mosquito Lagoon moving up into the shallows. Live baits like croakers and pigfish are done till next spring. Late fall and early winter, however, is typically a good time to catch them on plugs and live mullet as they fatten up and stuff themselves on baitfish before the bait supply thins out when winter settles in. Smaller schooling will be caught on jigs, shrimp and soft plastics over the next couple months in deeper troughs, sloughs, and creeks.

We’re still catching some nice snook in New Smyrna Beach with a few upwards of 10 pounds. Snook fishing will soon under go a massive transition. All the fish that are now still scattered around the area will soon mass migrate to deep holes for the winter to ride out the colder weather. That’s music to my ears, however, as it’s when I tend to catch the most numbers per day. It’s not uncommon for me to catch 20-30 snook a day when it happens. We’re only a few weeks out till this starts to happen, but we’ve already started to get some cold fronts and are finding less and less snook each day.

Got just over 15 days left open for November.  December bookings are going quickly as people make plans for holiday season fishing. December and January are fantastic times to fish our area so don’t wait till last minute because my calendar is usually booked full. I take last second scheduling if I have open days. Call me at 386-212-4931 or email to secure a date. Read my fishing charter page to view the top reasons why you should book your trip with me today. I look forward to fishing with you soon…
