New Smyrna Beach Area, Indian River Lagoon, Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report

Dog days of summer have definitely been upon us…with lots of hot weather and daily rainstorms. But that hasn’t slowed the bite one bit. It’s been catching like gangbusters! There is red hot fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon and areas around Ponce Inlet. We continue to catch on average 10+ redfish per day and 5-10+ trout. Trout bite continues to be good, but redfish bite has been so great that we aren’t spending hardly any time trout fishing. There are loads of baby Tarpon in the Indian River Lagoon and a lot of bigger adult tarpon hanging around Ponce Inlet and the nearshore waters. It won’t be long till we start seeing the fall transition take place with cold fronts and bait migrations. So get on it while it’s good! I’ve got about 12 days left open in August and 15 days left open in September.

Redfish action continues to be phenomenal in Mosquito Lagoon. We’re still averaging 10+ redfish per trip over the past few weeks. Some days are tougher and we only get 5-7 and then other days are epic and we get 15 or so. Almost everything has been averaging 4-10lbs. Although there are GIANT bull reds in the 20-40lb range getting ready to spawn in the Indian River Lagoon in addition to some in the ICW around the Ponce Inlet area. Action for these giant bull reds is going to take off over the next 4-6 weeks and there are days we’ll catch 10 or more.

Speckled Trout fishing over the past month continues to be good, although we aren’t spending much time fishing for them. We caught some quality trout when we did with a few in the 6-8lb range. There are loads of small school trout on the deep edges and you can quickly run out of bait and soft plastics on 12-15” trout. Trout bite will last all day long on deeper edges and sloughs. Live bait like pigfish, croakers, and live mullet are a ticket for guaranteed success. The live bait bite is so good, we’re not even bothering with lures. Later in September and October when the fall mullet run takes off we’ll start to catch a lot more giant trout approaching 10lbs.

There are loads of baby Tarpon in the 5-10lb range in the Indian River Lagoon. In the ICW around New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet we’re finding bigger adult tarpon over 50lbs. There are also fair numbers following bait pods in the ocean along the beaches outside the Inlet. During August and September that’s where we concentrate most of our tarpon efforts using swimbaits, plugs, and live bait. When we are fishing in the ocean doing the nearshore stuff, there are loads of small Sharks, Bonita, and Jack Crevalle. There’s never a slow day when we get out there, we just need calm enough seas and winds to allow for running a flats boat around.
