Labor Day comes this weekend but we’ve still got a couple months to go before fall gets here. The past few months have had strong fishing for redfish, speckled trout and snook here in East Central Florida. More recently, higher tides and lots of heavy rain have brought up the water levels in Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon where it’s been ultra shallow all summer. That big push of ocean water has also kicked off the annual mullet run. While the super busy summer season is winding down, my calendar doesn’t slow that much. Limited availability through September so grab a remaining date while you can!
Have you checked out my fishing report videos on Youtube? Head over to my Youtube Channel and give them a view. I break down what’s biting for us at the moment and include some photos of clients from the past month. If you want to stay in the loop subscribe to the channel and give those videos a thumbs up.
For the last couple weeks fishing for snook in New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet has produced the most consistent day to day action. Plenty of giant snook up to 40 inches are stacked up at the Inlet spawning. We’ve actually skipped all that because the flats, backwaters and docks have had snook up to 34 inches scattered all over (and we don’t have to fight any crowds/other boats to do it). Most are coming via live bait, with some here and there on flies and lures.
Fishing for redfish in Mosquito Lagoon, Indian River Lagoon, and Ponce Inlet will also stay a top priority. Bigger redfish are moving towards Ponce Inlet to spawn over the next few months which produces many redfish caught over 40 inches. Having said that I’ve also located a few schools of those giant trophy redfish on the shallow flats in both lagoons where we can sight fish them in shallow water. The higher water levels have broken up those schools of smaller redfish tailing on the grass flats, so now we turn our attention to the shorelines and bars.
Speckled trout fishing slowed down quite a bit in August but not before we caught several more big trout up to 28 inches. We’re past peak time of year for catch numbers and big gator trout but we’ll find some bites here and there for a little variety in the fishing action. As we go through the next few months fishing for speckled trout in Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon will take a back seat to the big redfish, snook and tarpon moving through the area.
