What a summer! It’s like we are fishing over a decade ago. Lots of redfish tailing in schools everywhere on the grass flats in Mosquito Lagoon! Speckled trout fishing has been pretty good over the past month with some big gator trout! Closer to New Smyrna Beach at Ponce Inlet there’s a big school of spawning snook, but we’ve been finding a fair number of snook on the flats in the lagoon and creeks too. Tarpon have been coming and going with limited results. Still enjoying my favorite time of year. The summer is always full of lots of action and a generally consistent bite every day. Only a handful of days left open through Labor Day so hope you aren’t waiting till the last minute to schedule something during the summer busy season!
Have you checked out my fishing report videos on Youtube? Head over to my Youtube Channel and give them a view. I break down what’s biting for us at the moment and include some photos of clients from the past month. If you want to stay in the loop subscribe to the channel and give those videos a thumbs up.
Mosquito Lagoon has been fishing like it did 10+ years ago for chasing redfish. The last month literally had balls of redfish tailing everywhere on the shallow grass flats. Low summer water had the fish concentrated into groups and we caught bunches on live bait on spin rods or fly fishing with flies. The three years of catch and release only on redfish has bounced things back to the most fish I’ve seen since 2015. Have also found some schools of 35-40” redfish in the Lagoons this year. Also finding the others big trophy redfish in the deeper water towards Ponce Inlet. While we’ve been catching some, the action on those big trophy redfish has been a little inconsistent this year. The flats sight fishing for reds has more than made up for it though.
Speckled trout fishing has been pretty strong over the past month throughout the North Indian River Lagoon system. Most days seeing 15+ trout a day with most being over 18-20”. A 29” and a 27” trout were the 2 biggest ones lately but we’ve had a few dozen 24-25” trout in the past month. Speckled trout bite should stay really good in the Lagoons for another month or so then will taper off a little each month heading into the fall.
Big snook are still piled up near or in Ponce Inlet and at the bridges and docks. It’s been a big spawning school this year and have been reports of several 40” fish caught which is pretty abnormal for our area. It’s also by far the most fishing pressure our snook have ever seen around here. In the creeks in New Smyrna Beach and the flats in Mosquito Lagoon & Indian River Lagoon, however, we’ve been finding fair numbers of big 28-35” snook cruising shallow water and we don’t have to share the fishing hole with other boats.
Tarpon in the backwaters near New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon have been here, there, and then moved again. Really haven’t seen any strong numbers lately either, just some usual groups that have maybe 15-20 fish rolling around. We haven’t spent much time trying for them lately. The occasional fish I’m seeing this week range anywhere form 25-100+ pounds.
