Everyone asks what’s my favorite time of year to fish? NOW…June is my favorite month because we do some serious catching! The action is hot from Ponce Inlet to Titusville. We are catching lots of redfish and speckled trout in Mosquito Lagoon. In the backwaters around New Smyrna Beach and Ponce Inlet we’re finding mixed bag of trout, snook, redfish, and tarpon. Everything can be an option this time of year. It’s also the busiest time of the year with packed summer calendar. Every month will be fully booked so don’t wait till last minute.
Have you checked out my fishing report videos on Youtube? Head over to my Youtube Channel and give them a view. I break down what’s biting for us at the moment and include some photos of clients from the past month. If you want to stay in the loop subscribe to the channel and give those videos a thumbs up.
Mosquito Lagoon has been good for redfish over the past month. While the winter schools are dispersed, low water has the fish condensed into the available water. We are catching several redfish each day in the 5-10 pound range fishing live bait. Seeing decent tailing in the grass action in some areas which make great targets for fly fishing. Summer is the peak time for giant redfish over 20 pounds! Bite has been steady and increasing each week with nearly every trip catching a few redfish over 40 inches and weighing 20-35 pounds. If a trophy bull redfish is on your bucket list, now is the time to do it.
Speckled trout fishing has picked up over the last 2 weeks. Not wearing them out by any means but have been catching 10-15 each day now in the 18-26” range. Sizes have picked up a little too with everyone catching a 4-6 pound trout most days. Haven’t seen any giants over 30 inches yet this year. They are out there, who’s gonna get lucky because this is the month it usually happens.
Big Snook have been biting at night in New Smyrna Beach at the bridges. We’re finding them in daytime in the backwaters of Mosquito Lagoon and the Indian River docks. Many days we catch a snook or two while we are targeting areas for trout and redfish with live bait. Most snook we’ve caught lately are 20-30 inches.
Tarpon have been pretty non existent until the last week. Over the last few days we’ve seen a bunch of them in a couple places in the backwaters and they finally seem receptive to biting. They are a unique change of pace or something to try for a little bit. My motto for tarpon is try them for a little bit and if they play keep at it. If they don’t lets not waste our day trying for nothing. The fish I’m seeing this week are in the 20-60 pound range. Likely will be seeing some giants over 80-100 pounds sneaking around any day as well.
